Mercedes-Benz safety technology

This isn’t because I’m knowledgeable about it in any way, but just because it fascinates and interests me. This is what leads me to write about the new (to me anyway) safety technology from Mercedes-Benz: PRE-SAFE® Impulse.

Impulse is an addition to Mercedes’ safety system designed to protect drivers and passengers in case of a crash or collision.  Autonomous braking, pedestrian detection and the City Brake function are all a part of the PRE-SAFE® safety technology, to which Impulse has been added.

So what exactly does this technology do to keep car occupants safe? Well, Impulse has been designed to keep people safe in case of a side impact to the car. It does this by moving the passengers at risk further away from the impact zone when it detects an oncoming impact to the side of the car.

Impulse moves the seat to move the passenger away

Because the crumple zone on the side of the car is fairly limited, drivers and passengers are at greater risk of injury from a side impact. However, the Impulse technology will improve safety by moving then away from the impact and closer to the center of the vehicle. It moves the occupant by inflating

“air chambers in the seat’s side bolster within fractions of a second. This gives the vehicle occupant the necessary side impulse to move the their head and upper body towards the centre of the vehicle”.

If you want, you can watch an animated video on how this is supposed to work on the Mercedes-Benz tech center site. According to Mercedes this latest addition to their safety technology collective PRE-SAFE® shouldn’t affect the ability to drive or the driver’s movements.

P.S. See if you can find the mistake in that quote from the Mercedes website.
